Tech is insidious. You need to be persistent. The big tech companies have lured us in with convenience and novelty, but the real trap is often dependence. I found that many of the apps, services, and devices in my life had multiple purposes, some of which were harder to give up than others. It requires diligence to slowly remove all of these dependencies. - How I disconnected from tech in 2025

Last year I (briefly) switched to an Android phone after many years on an iPhone. The stuff that was hard was lots of little things, great AirPod support, connecting to home smart devices, getting 1Password to work most of the time, replacing location sharing, finding a good podcast client, and realizing I lost access to my recipe app.

These things feel irreplaceable when stack up all the little conveniences.

Ignore the unkempt bushes. I built these two new modern Adirondack Chairs following plans from Etsy using construction lumber. Not sure I love the weathered blue stain but it wasn’t an involved or expensive project. Here’s to morning coffee in front of the house.

The only civilized way to deal with read email is to archive it. If you use iCloud+ with a custom domain, this is how you change the default.

Everything that used to work is still working and I now have functioning solar as well. Also, now I know what all the wires do.

My wife was just doing my daughters hair this morning before they head to camp drop-off. My daughter was fussing that it hurt, to which my wife replied, “No one said it was easy to be beautiful.”

My daughter immediately replied “It was a few minutes ago!” ☠️

I’ve been getting the Westy ready for our summer camping trip to the Olympic Peninsula. Trying to wire up Solar and the new battery. Finding myself wishing the previous owner had labeled literally anything.

I am dying. Woke up this am and my yard waste bin was missing. Online it costs $50 to replace and I started getting righteous. Then I discover waste management records a video of every pickup. … They are replacing it for free. 😂

Yesterday I noticed this thing on a telephone pole near my house. It’s about 8 feet up and doesn’t have any wires coming out of it. It looks like it has an antenna similar to a wireless access point. Any guesses what this might be?

Still working through a backlog of vacation snapshots. This labyrinth on Bainbridge Island is perfect. A slow walk in the woods, a quiet nod to a stranger, and suddenly the world feels calmer than before.

Fourth door for the library. I’m getting better and building these. This time I added an hook and loop catch. If this fails I might need to look at new hinges.

I didn’t brew the beers I planned so I’m catching up. Last week was a winter warmer, moved to secondary fermentation. This week, Octoberfest, just in time for April. Protip: a TimeTimer makes an excellent boil timer. #homebrew

Winter storms ripped the door off of our little library. This weekend I rebuilt it, this time I went with a single door using dowels to join the frame. 🤞

For the first time in almost 2 years, I’m working from an office. I’m doing a month trial of a co-working space in my neighborhood, 10 days a month at a floating desk. The bakery downstairs might be dangerous. Surprisingly, I’m nervous being around real humans again.

In the recent winter storm the door was ripped off my little library. I replaced it with two doors, both using cabinet hinges. 🤞

Stone cold, no joke, at the airport. Dude next to me orders a cup of chili with a single scoop of vanilla ice cream on it. Please remember. We are all surrounded by monsters.

I decided it was time to buy book versions of my day one journal. Super happy with the process and I’m getting 3 - 400 page books covering the last 7 years.

After almost six weeks of IT band troubles I was able to do an easy 4 mile run without pain. In the end PT and time were the only things that worked.
